Wow, what a night..
I had the opportunity to attend the Honors Omnibus Lecture last night, as well as a reception beforehand at Chancellor Wartell's residence. It was quite an affair. As usual, I sought out the guest speaker [David Brooks, op-ed columnist for the New York Times] and introduced myself, and in the process, met former Mayor Paul Helmke. Both are noted Republicans; I myseld lean toward Democrat, but am definitely a liberal. I was glad that neither was discussing anything too political, or I may have begun a debate.
The lecture was okay, until the end. I mentioned, during the time allotted for questions, that he had mentioed several key reforms, but said nothing about education reform. I asked how, if our government cannot afford the promises it has already made constituents, as Mr. Brooks stated, that it would afford any sort of education reform. HE DIDN'T ANSWER. He tiptoed around it, mentioning how he felt education reform needed reformed. Nothing about how it's going to be paid for!!!!
